Trilbert

Trilbert is a boardless strategy game for two players.

Rules

Two players, Blue and Red, share a common pool of pieces called trilberts. Each trilbert is like a jigsaw piece with four arms, coloured half blue and half red.

Start: The game starts with a single trilbert placed on the playing surface.

Play: Players then take turns adding a trilbert to extend the existing group. Trilberts can only be placed such that they interlock with at least one existing piece to be held securely; pieces should have no free play once placed.

End: Players win by completing a loop of their colour. The loop may pass through touching pieces of the same colour but may not jump across gaps. The enclosed region may be empty or occupied by enemy pieces. If this is achieved simultaneously for both players then the game is a draw.

If the tiles run out before either player wins, then the player with the largest connected group loses.

Example

The following example shows a quick game involving three moves. Note that each new piece interlocks securely with at least one existing piece. Red has won this game by forming a loop around the region labelled x.

History

Trilbert pieces and rules copyright (c) Cameron Browne, December 2007.

The name "trilbert" is a contraction of "Truchet Hilbert", as the piece shape is actually a mathematical curve called a Truchet contour composed entirely of circular arcs (right) and the H-like motif is reminiscent of the Hilbert curve generator.

Trilbert can be played on Richard's PBeM server - check out the help file for more details. Many thanks to the server regulars who helped test the game. Please challenge me (camb) to a game any time.
